xACT for Mac serves as a graphical wrapper for several Unix command line audio utilities. It includes tools such as encoders, decoders, checksum verifiers, tag editors, batch filename editors, CD extractors, and more. Overall, the utility feels snappy and performs well, being a handy all-in-one solution for audiophiles.
xACT for Mac separates its different command line utilities into tabs. Since these are completely independent of each other, you can run operations in several tabs, simultaneously. Here's what we did: in the first tab we decoded a three-minute FLAC file to a WAV, in the second we converted the WAV file to an M4A, and in the third we successfully checked the integrity of the original FLAC file by analyzing its FLAC fingerprint. The next two tabs contain utilities that generate various reports and fix errors such as sector boundaries. In the Tag tab you can edit the different tags in a track. The utility tab contains functions like batch file renaming and CD extraction. The last tab contains a lossy encoder where you can convert files to MP3 and AAC.
If you're an audiophile and want to convert your audio library to a different format or check file integrity, you'll find xACT for Mac extremely useful, since it saves you the trouble of fiddling with terminal and command line applications. Due to its streamlined interface, even casual users may find the app useful, especially the tag editor. The processing and conversion speeds won't disappoint you, either.
